I was intrigued by the recent article saying that avocado toast is the reason why millennials can’t afford a house. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against cafes which sell avocado toast expensively, and I still love having brunch in cafes once in a while. Here in Singapore, we don’t have the privilege of having locally grown avocados laying around for less than $2 per kg for “Alpukat Mentega” unlike in my hometown, Jakarta. We are provided with an expensively imported Hass-avocado for at least $5 per 3 pieces at our local supermarket. So yeah! Avocado is expensive, delicious and I can’t get enough of.
There are ways to minimize my avocadomania-expenditure by making it myself and save 3/4 costs. It is straightforward and easy to make. I just need a mediocre slice of bread (multigrain for me please), a piece of avocado, lime or lemon, salt and chili flakes. That’s all, and I can have an avocado toast as good as the $18 avocado toast I can get in cafes. If I feel fancy enough that day, I can add some sauté mushroom, feta cheese, eggs and anything you can imagine. Though, a simple everyday avocado toast is always a home run.
